A short story summary lets you check understanding without committing to a whole chapter. This exercise uses an invented film premise. Read it once, then answer the questions in your own words before opening the explanations.
The delayed delivery
A volunteer at a small observatory is preparing a public viewing night when the replacement telescope lens fails to arrive. The supplier says it was delivered to a nearby school. The volunteer asks the school caretaker to check, but the building is closing in twenty minutes and her car has a flat tyre.
Questions
- What is the volunteer preparing?
- What is the immediate problem?
- Where does the supplier say the lens was delivered?
- Which two details make the next step harder?
- Does the text confirm that the school has the lens?
Show answers and explanations
- A public viewing night at an observatory.
- The replacement telescope lens has not arrived at the observatory.
- A nearby school.
- The school closes in twenty minutes, and the volunteer has a flat tyre.
- No. We have the supplier’s account, not confirmation from the school. That distinction matters.
Check how you arrived at your answer
Label an answer as stated, inferred or not established. A detail can sound likely without being supported. For more original passages with explanations, try Cinema Hound’s movie-summary comprehension questions.
Apply a short routine
Preview the text, ask what problem connects its details, then write a one-sentence account. Return to a specific sentence when an answer is uncertain. RocketReader’s comprehension checklist gives you prompts for doing this with other reading material.
This exercise does not generate a standardised score or a reading-speed result. Its useful output is an answer you can explain with evidence, including a clear statement of what the passage does not tell you.
